UN-Art
All the ART you use for WORK and LIFE.
All the ART you use for WORK and LIFE.
I taugh Middle and High School mostly but a little Upper Elementary, as well... I used UN-Art almost every day. I created classroom visuals to reinforce everything I taught for dozens of different classes from English to Technical Theatre (even MATH!!!). I made Handbooks and Posters and Programs and countless other projects to help TEACH. There are companies that sell the same sort of stuff, but I was able to tailor everything specifically to my subjects, my school, and my STUDENTS. Every minute I spent on a piece of UN-Art was rewarded a thousandfold in the BUY-IN I got back from my kids. BUY-IN works for ANY work. Whether you're a waiter at Mr. Steak or the owner of a doomed Comic Book Shop, UN-Art of ANY kind can make what you DO more of who you ARE, and that's a BEAUTIFUL thing. (EXAMPLES)
Imagine awesome BUY-IN for all your relationships, including your relationship with YOU. Cards for ANY occasion, Making your space YOUR space, Spicing up any event with splash of pure YOU, promoting your mostly fictitious band through maybe one or two gigs a year with the same ten or twelve songs for FOUR DECADES... that sort of thing. UN-Art is therapy. UN-Art is sharing. UN-Art is the gift of YOU to others AND to YOU! (EXAMPLES)
Okay... I have been known to do a few regular commissions from time to time, but most of what I do is NOT FOR MONEY. I am happy and willing to create my brand of UN-Art for any cause that can use it to make something more BEAUTIFUL. I've done murals for theaters. T-shirt designs for camps and shows, etc., and I mostly do CUSTOM COMIC COVERS for kids who can really benefit from seeing themselves as a SUPERHERO or whatever else might give them hope for a better day than what they're currently having. If you or someone you know might want something like that, please let me know... I'm a sucker for a good cause. You can always contact me at challengingimprov@gmail.com (EXAMPLES)
We all use a little of our ART for stuff that isn't "for ART's sake." We use it for some other purpose. For work it can be designing shirts for the company picnic, or a flyer to promote this that or the other. For life it can be a Decorative Flower Arrangement for sick friend, or a homemade Valentine's Day card, or even a hand written note or poem or even a song for a loved one. We might not take these bits of UN-Art very seriously... just a hobby or a passing interest... but what if this UN-Art is more than that? What if your UN-Art is a true PASSION? Just not your vocation, the thing that pays the bills, but still... you LOVE to do this thing.
Often, we tend to press pause on these PASSIONS if we can't build our identity around them, and, sadly, our identity is usually tied to money. If we can't SELL ourselves as an ARTIST, we must not BE an ARTIST, and our PASSION wanes, or is just pushed to the side till we retire or win the lottery.
Challenging Improv was an entire Performance Improv style based on the premise that it is ALL your UN-Art that can create the beauty in your WORK and LIFE... no matter what you do or what identity you give yourself. I believe that if you embrace your PASSIONS... your UN-Art, you can make your WORK and LIFE soooooo much more fun and possibly even BEAUTIFUL.
Let's look at CHALLENGING IMPROV as an example. Let's look at JOHNNY...
Every graphic you see on this website is an example of UN-Art. The website itself is an example of UN-Art. Johnny is not an ARTIST, and he is certainly not a WEB-DESIGNER. Johnny is a teacher. He has no other working identity... no other labels that either he or anyone else could put on him based on the "thing that pays the bills" analogy. He is a professional teacher... that's it. Johnny is perfectly comfortable with that identity, AND Johnny throws every ounce of UN-Art that he possibly can into his teaching. Johnny has drawn literally thousands of drawings and posters and flyers and handouts and whatevers... to teach. Johnny has written and performed dozens of songs about ludicrous topics... to teach. Johnny had written hundreds of sketches and plays and musicals and even a WHOLE BOOK... to teach. Johnny learned Capoeira and Salsa... to teach. Johnny throws his aging body all over the place in the name of "movement" and even rides a unicycle... to teach.
